Braces

Braces for the Discerning Gentleman

In recent times there's been a bit of a thing for novelty braces. All very spirited and whimsical to be sure, but by and large, and with very few exceptions, it's not really a look we advocate. Our collection concentrates on a trimmer, quieter luxury.

A Decidedly More Sophisticated Approach

We favour a decidedly more sophisticated approach, the sort of thing we think would have been right up the great Fred Astaire's fashionable street. As it happens, Astaire, in his sparkling autobiography, Steps in Time, relates an informative story about how a gentleman wears braces. Once when the Prince of Wales, and his brothers the Duke of York and Prince George paid a back-stage visit, the Duke noticed that each of Astaire's trousers had their own pair of braces. “I say, that's a damned good idea. I must have my man do that instead of changing the blasted things from one pair to another.” Astaire also taught the Prince the latest dance steps. Discerning gentlemen all.

That's a refined touch we think advanced dressers will find worth considering, those gentlemen whose trousers sit lightly on their hips. As with everything else, classic dress has its codes of civility.

Our Range of Braces

Our slimmer dress braces are of finest elastic, in a 2.25cm width. The fasteners are of matching braid, the hardwear brass, with chocolate brown leather trim to coordinate better with brown shoes.

Our evening braces have black braided ends and black leather trim (because no one wears brown evening shoes). The collection also includes dove grey formal braces – perfect for dress daywear – with silver braid and nickel fittings, for the tonal mien you'd expect.

Our classic, regular width braces are of finest woven barathea with contrasting braided fasteners, brass hardwear and brown leather trim. We think you'll find these distinctive braces have all the true hallmarks of pure swank.

We present the ultimate brace made with 100% pure wool boxcloth, woven in Yorkshire and finished by being shrunk to half its original width. Regular width braces with contrasting braided fasteners.
